“Il manifesto First Thing First fu scritto il 29 novembre 1963 e pubblicato nel 1964 da Ken Garland. Fu supportato da oltre 400 grafici e artisti e ricevette il sostegno di Tony Benn, che lo pubblicò nella sua interezza sul quotidiano The Guardian. Basandosi su idee condivise dalla teoria critica, ribadì esplicitamente la convinzione che il design non fosse un processo neutro e privo di valore. Si radunò contro la cultura consumistica che si preoccupava esclusivamente di comprare e vendere cose e cercò di evidenziare una dimensione umanista nella teoria del design grafico.” Il concept progettuale è quello di dare la giusta enfasi alle parole e di creare un layout dinamico attraverso il solo utilizzo della tipografia, in un solo peso e di un solo colore.

“The First Things First manifesto was written 29 November 1963 and published in 1964 by Ken Garland. It was backed by over 400 graphic designers and artists and also received the backing of Tony Benn, who published it in its entirety in The Guardian newspaper. Drawing on ideas shared by critical theory, the Frankfurt School and the counter-culture of the time it explicitly reaffirmed the belief that design is not a neutral, value-free process. It rallied against the consumerist culture that was purely concerned with buying and selling things and tried to highlight a Humanist dimension to graphic design theory.” The design concept is give the right emphasis to the words and create a dynamic layout through the only use of typography, in a single weight and in one color.
